Our Story

Hello!

My name is Lucia. I want to personally welcome and thank you for arriving on this page where you will learn a bit more about La Maritxu and the story behind it.

It all started before Christmas 2021. We are a Basque family of three sisters: Maria, who lives in Quito, Almudena, the youngest, and myself, Lucia, living in London. It had been a long time since we had the idea of bringing the Basque culture to our new living places and one of the best things about the Basque culture is its gastronomy.

Maria was the first one in the adventure, hence the name: La Maritxu. Ending the names with -txu (pronounced ‘2’ like the number) is a close and familiar way of calling people in the Basque country. Using the family recipe of the basque cheesecake, also known as San Sebastian cheesecake, ours with a family touch and a very special ingredient: love.

I decided to continue the adventure in London. I am an architect and have worked as an architect for 5 years. At the beginning of La Maritxu, I was working in the office during the day and baking in the evenings and weekends. It was very recent when I decided to quit my architectural job and follow the passion with La Maritxu.

Using the best quality ingredients and the most important one: love; every week, basque cheesecakes are made for happy Londoners. At the moment it is the original Basque Cheesecake, the one and only product, but there are plans in the future for discovering different flavors…stay tuned.
